Catalogue Note

Placidus and his sister Flavia were sent by Benedict, the founder of Western Monasticism, to preach in Sicily. They were martyred by Moorish pirates in Messina.

The work is an old, near contemporary copy, after the original attributed to Perugino and collaborator found in the Pinacoteca Vaticana (see P. Scarpellini, Perugino, Milan 1984, cat. no. 88, reproduced p. 208 ill. no. 141).
