Jacob Wynants Active in Middelburg 1601-1637

Acquired by the present owner approximately thirty years ago.

This appears to be the only extant work by this little-known artist from Middelburg. He is first mentioned there in 1601 and was the Dean of the Middelburg painters guild of St. Luke in both 1635 and 1637, after which date there is no further mention of him. This work draws on the influences of Wynant's better known Middelburg contemporary Mattheus Molanus (died 1645), although its large scale differs markedly from Molanus' small meticulous panels which, in turn, hark back to those of Jan Brueghel the Elder.
