Catalogue Note

As Drs Luuk Pijl has pointed out in recent correspondence, the present work may be compared to Jan Brueghel the Elder's Woodland Scene in Milan, Ambrosiana Gallery (see K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere, Cologne 1979, p. 559, cat. no. 16, reproduced p. 195, fig. 229) which can be dated to 1595-7 and which was formerly attributed to Paul Bril.
