Catalogue Note

The candlestick, held aloft by Hercules, recurs throughout Conte's œuvre; see, for example, his similar still life in the Karlsruhe Museum (see M. Faré, under Literature, p. 225, reproduced). It was designed by Charles Le Brun for Louis XIV and is mentioned in the royal inventory.
