Carlo Francesco Nuvolone

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The soft wood support has previous worm damage. There are two horizontal reinforcing battens on the reverse. An unstable split, upper right, has fractured the paint surface. Pronounced wood grain shows through the thin paint layer. There is some restorations to the sky upper right, where there has been some minor paint loss, and small restouchings lower left. Under U-V light can be seen the remains of a patchy discoloured varnish."

Having first studied with his father, the painter Panfilo Nuvolone, Carlo Francesco attended the Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan where he became a pupil of Giovanni Battista Crespi, called il Cerano. It was there that he also came into contact with Daniele Crespi and Giulio Cesare Procaccini, all of whose styles clearly influenced this work.
