Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. The paint surface is slightly raised but stable. There is evidence of an abraded paint surface, particularly in the background , and original glazes have been compromised e.g. the writing, the darker areas of the lute and the shadow of the tablecloth. The varnish is discoloured."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The Young Lover's Enquiry, also known as The Bachelor's Question to Cupid, is a traditional English ballad and suggests that Collier painted this work during his period in London, between the years 1693 and 1706.
