Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. The paint surface is raised but stable, the impasto has been slightly compromised. There are numerous minor paint losses , some have been retouched out e.g. the background in the curtain, background left and beneath the ledge. The paint of the oriental carpet has been compromised and there is restoration here. The original glazes have been abraded."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Juriaan van Streek was strongly influenced by the still lifes of Willem Kalf (1619-1693) and indeed his works have often been attributed to Kalf in the past. Most of these wrongly-attributed works have been only recently re-assigned to Van Streeck, as is the case with a painting extremely similar to this still life which was sold London, Sotheby's, 12 April 1989, lot 59. Van Streek constantly repeated the same scheme which he borrowed from Kalf, of building up his compositions using some cropped drapery to create a sense of depth, on which he places a porcelain bowl, slightly overlapping a silver plate dish.

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Juriaan van Streek on the basis of photographs.
