Description

- The Deposition
- oil on oak panel, shaped top
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The panel has a repaired central joint and a vertical split, left. There is a concentration of old restoration in these areas. The paint surface is stable but paint thinness and pale cracquelure have been reduced by previous restoration and there is a small amount of restoration to the faces. Evidence of a moderately discoloured varnish. Remains of original gold paint on the trompe l'oeil frame."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note
This painting is based, with some differences, on the Deposition by the Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece in the National Gallery, London, which can be dated circa 1500 (inv. no. NG6470 and for which see C. Baker & T. Henry, The National Gallery. Complete Illustrated Catalogue, London 1995, p. 437, reproduced).
