Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel has a slight bow and two vertical splits of approximately 3cm long, upper right ; these are restored but are unstable. The paint layer is stable. Under U-V light can be seen a small scattering of retouchings to the background. The varnish has discoloured and degraded, it's removal would significantly improve the tonality. Overall, the painting is in a good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Another version, monogrammed, was sold in Paris, 15 December 1909, lot 11, and is in Hofstede de Groot, no. 84, but from the old photograph it too looks like an old copy.
