Catalogue Note

Mathieu proposed a date of circa 1892 for this very characteristic work by Moreau (see Literature).  The artist made a number of such watercolors of single female figures with symbolist subjects, of similar dimensions.  It would appear that they were made for sale to collectors:  in 1893 Moreau entered into an agreement with the Allard et Noël Gallery to supply them with small precious works for their clients.
