Catalogue Note

This double-sided sheet of studies bears a traditional attribution to Solimena and may have been intended for an Assumption or a Coronation of the Virgin.  The verso shows that the male 'angels' are surrounding a globe as in two drawings in the Società di Storia Patria, Naples (see Disegni napoletani del Sei e del Settecento, exhibition catalogue, Naples, Museo di Capodimonte, 1966-1967, nos. 34 and 35).  The verso of the latter, a nude, is also drawn on prepared paper.
