Literature

Since 1974, when this drawing was sold as Aert de Gelder, research into attributions of drawings of the Rembrandt school has progressed enormously.  In the light of current knowledge, the scholarly consensus is that this drawing is in fact closest in style to the work of Willem Drost. The broadly delineated figures and specific facial types are, for example, comparable with drawings now given to Drost, such as the Judith Triumphant, in the British Museum (see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, vol. 3, New York 1980, no. 548x), or the Street Scene, in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (see M. Plomp, The Dutch Drawings in the Teylers Museum..., Haarlem/Ghent/Doornspijk 1997, cat. no. 118).
