Catalogue Note

The attribution was suggested by Fritz Koreny.  At an early age, Asper appears to have come into contact with the art of Hans Holbein, and this influence remained important for him.  During his long career he achieved considerable success, and particularly during the 1540s and '50s, he was one of the leading painters working in his native city of Zürich.
