Catalogue Note

This drawing, which was previously published as a work by Francesco Solimena, appears much closer to the style of Luca Giordano.  The lines are more fluent and rounded than in the drawings of Solimena, for instance Women whipping a man (Louvre, inv. no. 16216) and The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence (Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, inv. no. 6563), both illustrated in Walter Vitzthum, Il barocco a Napoli e nell' Italia meridionale.1
