Catalogue Note

This study corresponds, with some differences, to Cambiaso's fresco of the subject on a ceiling in the Palazzo Lercari-Parodi, Genoa (fig. 1).  The decoration of the room is based on episodes from the story of Niobe, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses.  Suida-Manning dates the work around 1570.1  A drawing for one of the other scenes in the room is in the Uffizi, and is very similar in style to the present example.2
