Description

  • Jacopo Zucchi
  • an allegorical subject, possibly commemorating a marriage, with jupiter above and various figures below, one holding a shield
  • on the mount: cav.Liberi and on the verso in pencil: Cav. d'Arpino/531 and in pen: No21
  • pen and brown ink and wash over black chalk

Catalogue Note

Although this drawing was previously attributed to Marco Marchetti da Faenza, it is a typical example of Jacopo Zucchi's more rapid sketches.  It can be closely compared with other studies such as The Festival of Orpheus in the Art Museum, Princeton University1 or three sheets in the Louvre: David and Bathsheba, The Adoration of the Shepherds and Christ Before Pilate.2
