Condition

Both somewhat abraded in places around the edges, and with minor losses and stains in the sky. The larger drawing has a repaired tear, lower right. Otherwise reasonably good and fresh. Sold in modern frames.

Catalogue Note

Attributions within the Blarenberghe family can be very hard to establish with certainty.  In this case, however, the unusual subject-matter, and the figure types suggest that the most likely author is Jacques Guillaume (also known as Jacobus) van Blarenberghe, by whom a signed set of gouaches representing the four seasons were sold, London, Christie's, 9 December 1980, lots 158-161.
