Catalogue Note
Lucas van Uden is known only as a landscape draughtsman and painter, so the subject of the present drawing is totally exceptional for him. The handling in the background landscape is, however, not dissimilar to the few chalk landscapes that we know by Van Uden. As an artist who trained and worked in the Rubens-dominated milieu of Antwerp during the first half of the 17th century, he must have been constantly exposed to compositions such as this, and could perfectly possibly have experimented in this way, perhaps early in his career; the composition, though very Rubensian, does not in fact seem to derive from any known work by the master.
