Catalogue Note

Edgar Munhall, in a letter dated 15 February 2000, stated that this drawing is "a wonderful example of Greuze's work in the mid-1760s, when he was much concerned with maternal subjects, reflecting that happy phase in his own life when he and his wife were rearing small children.  The technique is unusual and fresh;  the composition is full of the artist's customary action.  I know of no closely related painting, drawing or print".
