Catalogue Note

It has previously been suggested that this drawing records part of the frame of Pierre II Le Gros's sculpted altarpiece, Triumph of the Church over Heresey, in the Roman church of the Gesù, but in fact the relevant figures do not correspond.  It does, however, remain possible that this is a copy of part of a similar sculpture in a church in Rome.
