Description
- a male academy, standing with both hands on his knees
- possibly signed or inscribed, lower centre: J. Vien, and with an illegible three line inscription in red chalk at the top right
- red and white chalk on light brown paper
Provenance
Purchased London, Christie's, 29 November 1977, lot 193 (as Jean Marie Vien, signed)
Catalogue Note
This very attractive and vigorous study was attributed to Vien on the basis of the possible signature on the rock. Very few academies by Vien are known and this does not, in fact, resemble them.
