Colours are warmer and much brighter in reality than in the catalogue. The image shows reflection of the camera flash in the angles which is not visible in reality. Under UV light: A few overpainted areas next to the monument, at the two figures' feet, at the Bacchanale's feet and in the tree, next to Pan's right hand. The canvas is a bit worn in the blue sky and on the clouds, right side of the composition. Old varnish badly cleaned.

Filippo Lauri fut d'abord formé dans l'atelier de son père Balthasar Lauwers, paysagiste flamand dont le nom fut volontairement changé lorsqu'il immigra en Italie. Il reçut ensuite l'enseignement de son frère aîné, Francesco Lauri, lui-même élève d'Andrea Sacchi, ce qui permit à Filippo de s'imprégner du style classique de grands artistes bolonais tels que Le Dominiquin et l'Albane. Il perfectionna enfin son apprentissage auprès de son beau-frère Angelo Caroselli.
Le jeune peintre devint membre de l'Académie de Saint-Luc en 1654 et fut plus tard nommé Principe ou directeur de l'Académie. On fit appel à son talent pour d'importantes commandes à Rome dont la décoration de la galerie d'Alexandre VII du palais du Quirinal sous la direction de Pierre de Cortone en 1656-1657, une partie de la décoration de la galerie du Casino Farnese en 1662, et il peignit également les deux petites pièces du palais Borghèse en 1671.
Filippo se spécialisa par ailleurs dans les petits tableaux de sujets religieux ou mythologiques réalisés pour des amateurs éclairés parmi lesquels on peut placer le présent tableau mettant en scène une bacchanale daté de 1645, soit assez tôt dans l'oeuvre de l'artiste.
