Catalogue Note
Pierre-Nicolas Legrand de Lérant fut élève de Decamps à Rouen. Il quitta Paris en 1795 pour fuir la Révolution et s'établit à Berne où il devint le portraitiste officiel de l'aristocratie locale. Il connut la notoriété en exposant au Salon de 1796 le Portrait de Cange, commissaire de prison, symbole de générosité sous la Révolution. Par la suite, il se spécialisa avec succès dans les portraits de famille et scènes de genre.
