Condition

Original canvas. Some repaints in the water in the foreground, in the shade; also on the walls in the shade, and in the roof. We've asked for a condition report from a restaurer. In the shades some glazes has been wormed and retouched also there are some repaints scattered on the surface. The left hand column is retouched.

Catalogue Note

Exceptionnel par sa taille (Antonietta Brandeis a surtout peint des petits formats), le tableau montre un endroit disparu de Venise: le cortile de l'ancienne abbaye San Gregorio, qui fut en partie détruite à la fin du XIXe siècle, pour édifier les murs néogothiques du palais Genovese. Sur un fond architectural très élaboré, l'artiste représente de façon pittoresque la vie quotidienne du peuple vénitien: pêcheurs, marchands de fruits etc., travaillant ou se reposant dans le cortile dominé par les coupoles de la Salute.
