Catalogue Note
In recent years, McIntyre has been specifically interested in the peculiar and unsettling qualities of the often neglected landscapes at the junction of rural and urban areas; flyovers, paths, underpasses and greenbelts. Works such as Underpass (2003) and Threshold (2005) are highly aesthetic and yet infused with a sense of forbidding within their empty, artificially lit spaces. In contrast, Veil III and Lough V, achieve a new and luminous effect and whilst retaining the mysterious intrigue of her earlier work, they are instilled with a more subtle and poetic narrative.
Born in Coleraine, McIntyre studied at the University of Ulster and was selected to represent Northern Ireland in their first pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2005. She has also had numerous solo shows at galleries such as Arte Ricambi, Verona; the Goethe Institut, Dublin; the Third Space Gallery, Belfast and the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin.
