Sean Shanahan

The present work is typical of the artist's output from the early 1990s when he was working on a variety of unlikely painting surfaces such as fibreboard and natural woods as well as the polished steel sheets evident in Untitled which inevitably draw attention to the importance of the material itself. Continually abstract, Shanahan later developed a stronger focus on the complex properties of colour itself (see lots 65 and 79).

Born in Dublin, Shanahan studied in London and Madrid and has lived and worked in Montevecchia, Northern Italy since the early 1980s. He has exhibited extensively throughout Europe including solo exhibitions at the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin; the Dublin City Gallery the Hugh Lane and the Fondazione Scarampi, Italy.
