Catalogue Note
Born in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, Flanagan spent much of his childhood in Co. Sligo around Lissadell and he became aware of the atmospheric changing properties of the landscape around him from an early age. It is therefore not surprising that the landscape forms the core subject matter of his oeuvre. Whilst he has painted extensively throughout Ireland and had short periods in Europe and the U.S., the present work focuses on the Lagan Valley, a lush, vibrant landscape close to where he now lives and works in Belfast.
Flanagan studied at the Belfast College of Art and since his first solo exhibition at CEMA, Belfast in 1960, he has exhibited extensively at galleries such the Hendriks Gallery, Dublin; the Tom Caldwell Gallery, Belfast; the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol and the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry. In 1995 he was the subject of a major retrospective at the Ulster Museum, Belfast which toured to the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and the Fermanagh County Museum and he was subsequently asked to mount a retrospective at the Stadsmuseum, Gotenburg, Sweden. Flanagan was past President of the Royal Ulster Academy from 1978 - 1982.
