Catalogue Note

The genesis for Teskey's vivid treatment of the dramatic coastal landscape in the present work was a fellowship at the Ballinglen Foundation in Ballycastle in the mid 1990s. Located on the rugged Atlantic Coast in north Co. Mayo, the Foundation was perfectly situated for Teskey to experience the dynamic relationship between sky, sea and earth. Since his time at Ballinglen, the artist has been inspired to work along the coastlines of Connemara, West Cork and Mayo, producing studies and sketches that are later worked up in his studio into the monumental proportions of the present work which most likely depicts the Mayo coast near Downpatrick. The thickly applied impasto verges on the abstract whilst at the same time sculpting the coastline to spectacular effect.

Having studied at the Limerick College of Art and Design, Teskey has had numerous solo exhibitions in Ireland and the U.K at galleries such as The Rubicon Gallery, Dublin; Art First, London and the Limerick City Art Gallery, Limerick. Most recently, in 2006, he was elected as artist - in - residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut where his new experience of the landscape there developed his focus from the horizontal nature of the coast line to the vertical emphasis of the surrounding forest.
