Catalogue Note
le Brocquy first depicted Yeats in 1975 after a commission from Per-Olov Börjesson, a Swedish Gallery owner, who was producing a series of 33 aquatints of Nobel prize winners; 'from among the several Irish Nobel prizewinners at that date I chose Yeats as my subject, having known him when I was a boy and because of his vast and mysterious personality' (le Brocquy, quoted in Louis le Brocquy Portrait Heads, exh.cat., National Gallery of Ireland, 2006, p. 60).
