Dr Jan Sommers was a general practitioner in Amsterdam and known for his love for Fine Art. In between visits to his patients he regularly stopped to view the new collection at the Stedelijk Museum or to take another look at the works by Karel Appel, or he went to see a new exhibition at an art gallery before going home to his wife Nettie at the end of the day. He was known for talking with great enthusiasm about art with his friends and colleagues.
During the early Sixties he became friends with various artists and gallery owners. Well-informed, they referred one another to the newest and hottest art exhibitions and developments of the time. So it came that Dr Jan Sommers introduced Roger Raveel to Reinier Lucassen. He became a well-known visitor to the artist's studios of, amongst others, J.C.J. van der Heyden, as well as young artists such as Ger van Elk, Jan Dibbets, Rob van Koningsbruggen and Ad Petersen, who in turn found an ideal family doctor in Dr Jan Sommers. One of Dr Jan Sommers's patients and well-known artists once wrote: "I have never found a more spontaneous and enthusiastic art lover than Jan and, at the same time, I have never had a family doctor that could stand in his shadow, although I have known many.
Sotheby's is honoured to offer this fine collection of impressive works by Jan Dibbets, Ger van Elk, along with early works by J.C.J. van der Heyden, Reinier Lucassen, Rob van Koningsbruggen and Roger Raveel.
