Description

  • length 30 1/4 in. (77cm)
lavishly carved with vignettes depicting the story of Purim including the Triumph of Mordechai, the King extending his scepter to Esther, the King and Haman seated at the feast prepared by Esther, and the Hanging of Haman, all titled in Hebrew with appropriate verses from the Esther story, the lower section vignettes interspersed with Signs of the Zodiac titled in Hebrew, the mid-section with two rampant lions flanking the crown of Esther above the maker's name, one vignette with the Austro-Hungarian double-headed eagle, fitted with an Esther scroll written in black ink on three parchment membranes, with artist's carved signature at top and above midpoint

Condition

scroll is double skinned, back with losses at edges; case with 2 leaf tips missing at shoulders, one repaired crack at shoulder, otherwise very good condition

Catalogue Note

Dolina is a small town in the Western Ukraine, formerly a part of Poland, then the Austrian empire.  In 1900 the Jewish community numbered 2,654 persons, almost all of whom perished during the Nazi occupation.
