The scene depicts Krishna’s battle with the demon Nikumbha related in the Mahabharata. According to the story, the demon had abducted a princess named Bhanumati who was ultimately rescued by Krishna.
Krishna clad in full battle armor is seen attacking the fierce demon who prepares to strike back with his battle axe. Krishna’s brother Balarama stands in readiness behind him. Among the large retinue of armed soldiers are the five Pandava brothers seen behind Balarama, while their foes, the Kaurava brothers, are seen with Bhishma at lower center. The combat takes place in a clearing amidst hills surrounding the demon’s lair. Krishna’s parents Devaki and Vasudev are pictured at the lower right corner while the Gods also witness this epic battle from their abode amidst the clouds above.
