The feelings of desire and longing traditionally associated with the monsoon in Indian poetry are skilfully evoked by the artist in the present painting. The lovers soak in the mood of the season as peacocks dance in joy.

Catalogue Note

The floral surround with the ogival motif at the four corners is also seen in Mandi paintings of this period. Compare with an illustration from the Bihari Satsai in the collection of the Linden Museum, Stuttgart; see Joachim Bautze, Lotosmond und Lowensitt: Indische Miniaburmalerei, Stuttgart, 1991, no. 77, p. 186.
