The illustration above with accompanying text, depicts the episode in the Mahabharata relating the attack of the warrior Shalya on the Pandava army at the great battle of Kurukshetra. Shalya, fighting on the side of the Kauravas, is seen raining arrows on the Pandavas, led by their commander Krishna, who is pictured here as Vishnu, holding his conch and mace. Krishna ultimately vanquishes his foe.
The second illustration in this lot pictures Krishna being embraced in gratitude by Yudhisthira as the other Pandava brothers look on.
