Description

  • Sridevi Amulet
  • Distemper on cloth
  • Dimensions: 12 1/8 by 12 3/4 in (30.8 by 32.4 cm)
The black ground amulet depicting the dharmapala Sridevi, Penden Lhamo, drawn in gold line with colored details, the ferocious goddess riding through a sea of blood on her mule and with its head looking steadfastly forward, all surrounded by concentric bands with continuous lines of mantras, encircled by an eight-petal lotus with mantras, and contained within an outer ring of continuous script.

Catalogue Note

The amulet would have been folded into a tight package and worn about the person as a charm, probably contained within a ga'u. Compare the line drawings by the Fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Losang Gyatso (1617-1682), see Karmay, 1988.
