Catalogue Note
This image closely follows Griswold’s parameters for ‘mixed type’ images which are characterized by Sukhothai elements; a flame final emanating from the usnisha, an oval face, a long robe the end of which extends to below the navel and the seated position of virasana. Shakyamuni’s conquest over Mara was a theme of great importance to the Thais who were predominantly Theravada Buddhist and this subject is one of the most popular in Thai sculpture.
