Description

  • Buddha
  • Gray Schist
  • Height: 18 1/2 in (47 cm)
A figure of the Buddha standing on a rectangular, molded plinth, wearing long monastic robes, covering both shoulders and falling in thick, densely ridged folds, gathered and draping over the raised arms. The left hand would have been holding the edge of the robe while the right formed abhaya mudra in keeping with the usual iconographic conventions. The broad, muscular chest and the left flexed knee can be seen through the robes. The face has a strong expression with the eyes half closed and the square jaw set firmly. His wavy hair is pulled back and rises to form the usnisha, and behind his head is a large halo with a countersunk sawtooth border. Compare Ingholt, H.; Gandharan Art in Pakistan, New York, 1957, pl. 225.
