Description

  • Head of Buddha
  • Stucco with traces of pigment
  • Height: 7 3/4 in (19.7 cm)
A beautiful head of Buddha slightly inclined to the right side, the face modeled with a benevolent expression, the eyes half closed but alert and the lips forming a slight smile. The elongated earlobes and curly hair are boldly modeled and there are traces of black paint denoting eyebrows and the pupils of the eyes, and red paint accentuating the lips and urna.

Catalogue Note

The head inclined in such a graceful movement is indicative of the Buddhas compassion and can be compared to an example in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, I.M.3-1931 published Hallade, M.; The Gandhara Style and the Evolution of Buddhist Art, Thames and Hudson, 1968, p. 143, pl. 106.
