Description
- A Jain Stele
- Sandstone
- Height: 20 3/4 in (52.7 cm)
A Jina sitting on a lion throne beneath an umbrella, flanked by two standing Jinas each protected by the serpent king, Dharanendra. Above them is a three tiered roof with a horseshoe-shaped 'window' surmounted by a two-tiered chattra. To the left is a decorative arch and to the right is a warrior wielding a sword riding on the back of a mythical creature.
Catalogue Note
The three figures are all naked indicating that they are from the Digambara sect of Jainism. Compare the lion throne and central figure with a similar example published in Pal. P.; Indian Sculpture, Vol II, LACMA, 1988, p. 126, Fig. 52.
