Catalogue Note
Le Sidaner first visited Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Cap Ferrat on the Côte d'Azur, in 1912. The bay was an inspiration for his style of painting: colorful, picturesque and sunlit. Le Sidaner spent much of the mid-1920s at Villefranche and stayed at the Hotel Welcome in the heart of the Old Port. La Table de la Mer, Villefranche-sur-Mer depicts the artist's hotel room, its French windows leading out onto the balcony with a view of the sparkling bay beyond. The cool shadowed room in the foreground giving on to a sun dappled balcony with the bright bue of the Mediterranean beyond presents a tranquil and peaceful scene.
