Apart from a few minor paint losses at the upper edge (not visible when framed) and a small paint loss at the right hand side of the hour-glass, this work is in very good condition.

Le Temps Naturel regroupe deux concepts novateurs de Man Ray au sein d'une même œuvre : l'objet readymade et les Peintures Naturelles. L'incorporation d'un objet dans un tableau, dans ce cas précis le sablier, rappelle la période dada de Man Ray et les Readymades de Duchamp. C'est l'élévation d'un objet de la vie quotidienne au rang d'œuvre d'art. Le sablier est assimilé à un fond peint selon la technique des Peintures Naturelles, série que Man Ray commence en 1958. Après avoir versé de l'acrylique sur un support, il pressait un panneau dessus puis en le soulevant révélait des formes qui constituaient une abstraction créée sans pinceau. Le titre Le Temps Naturel est un jeu de mots qui se réfère à la fois au titre de cette série, les Peintures Naturelles, et au cycle du temps déterminé par la nature, montré en cela par l'écoulement du sable.
