Catalogue Note

Le Coq d'Or, with choreography by Fokine and sets and costumes by Gontcharova, was first produced by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra, Paris, on May 21, 1914.
The previous owner of this work, George Verdak, was a dancer with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo 1942-1951 and later became artistic director of the Indianapolis Ballet Theater and director of the dance department at Butler University, Indianapolis.  The present work is closely related to the stage design illustrated in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Russian Theater and Costume Designs, Sacramento, 1979, no. 62, p.47.
