Description

Tiger Woods is the winner of 12 of golf's major championships and is the sport’s most dominant figure since Jack Nicklaus. Before he became a superstar, Woods was a golf prodigy as a child: his father Earl reportedly introduced Tiger to the sport at age 9 months, and at age 2 the youngster made a now-famous appearance putting with Bob Hope on The Mike Douglas Show. Woods won three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles (1994-96), and in 1996 turned pro with a $40 million contract from Nike and fame usually reserved for movie stars. Woods made good on the hype, winning 46 PGA tournaments in his first ten seasons on the tour. This scorecard speaks to the roots of Tiger’s greatness, when his father Earl encouraged and nurtured his son’s obvious natural ability on the public courses surrounding their home in Southern California. On a sunny afternoon in 1986, our consignor was resting at the “19th hole” of the Los Alamitos Country Club as he watched a young boy and his father finishing their round. Marveling at the extraordinary abilities of this little boy, the likes of which he’d never seen, he intuitively picked up his scorecard from his recently completed round and politely asked the boy’s father for permission to request his son’s autograph. The proud father not only acquiesced, but indicated that it would be wise to do so, stating his assurance that his son would someday make his mark in golf. This scorecard is signed in pencil, “Best Wishes Tiger Woods.” Tiger’s addition of the date “4-28-86” reveals that he was ten years-old that day. His father Earl Woods has signed the scorecard as well. The scorecard, folded in thirds, has been framed along with an image of a grown-up Tiger with his father Earl, along with two trading cards featuring young Tiger and a descriptive plaque. To our knowledge, this is the earliest known Tiger Woods signed scorecard. A letter of provenance is included from our consignor. Additional LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA.
