Description

  • width 8.8cm, 3 3/8 in
apparently unmarked, Geneva, circa 1865

of rounded rectangular form, the cover with an oval lid enamelled in translucent blue and set with a rose diamond floral spray, concealing the white enamel dial with Roman numerals, the interior of the lid with a photograph, the ground enamelled with strapwork on an engraved ground, the base with a flowery cartouche engraved: David Sassoon,

Provenance

Probably Sassoon David Sassoon (1832-1867); thence by descent

David Sassoon (1792-1864) had fourteen children, of whom six were boys, all of whom were given David as a second name.  The eldest, Sassoon David Sassoon, is probably the "David Sassoon" to whom the engraving refers and the man in the photogarph, given the dates of the object and the photograph, likely taken in the 1860s and showing a man in his thirties.

Condition

Excellent condition apart from the enamel losses to the lid, which are visible in the catalogue photo. The watch face is lacking its glass. Minor scratches to the base. Sotheby's does not guarantee the watch movement.
