Description
- Warming pan on stand 22cm, 8 1/2 in high
the cup and saucer, warming pan, and burner engraved with the cypher EA, the warming pan and saucer inscribed Presented by Their Royal Highnesses the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Sophia, 21 September 1845
Provenance
The cypher is that of Ernest Augustus (1845-1923), Crown Prince of Hanover and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who was born on 21 September.
Catalogue Note
Ernest Augustus married Princess Thyra, youngest daughter of Christian IX of Denmark in 1878, but never became King of Hanover, his father having been deposed by the Prussians after siding with Austria in 1866.
Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester (1776-1867), referred to in the inscription, was the eleventh child of King George III. She married her first cousin, the Duke of Gloucester, on 22 July 1816. Princess Sophia (1777-1848), Mary's younger sister, remained unmarried.
