Description

  • SAMUEL MARX
  • Coffee Table for Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Block, 1325 North Astor, Chicago, Illinois
  • verre églomisé in silver leaf, wood

Provenance

Wright Chicago, May 22, 2005, lot 102

Literature

Alexander Payne and James Zemaitis, The Coffee Table Coffee Table Book, London, 2003, p. 81 (for a similar example from the interior of Mervyn Leroy, Bel-Air)

Condition

Overall in excellent condition. Two of the tiles to the lower legs with small chips. Minor scratches to the surface of the glass tiles, more concentrated to the lower portion of the legs. One of the smaller glass tiles to the side of the top has cracked, but has been professionally stabilized. Recently, several tiles were also re-glued by the restorer. The irregularities to the silvered surface below the glass are inherent in the aging process of the materials and past restorations. However, it is our opinion that this only augments the complexity of the appearance of the surface. The table is sold with an additional seven glass tiles. The photo in the catalogue and online is washed out. The table is much richer in colors, especially in the gold and greens.

Catalogue Note

It is believed that Marx designed only two of these extraordinary mirrored tables for his interiors.
