Catalogue Note
This expressive early stool by J.B. Blunk exemplifies the raw design of this master craftsman. The development of the shape comes not only from the natural form of the single piece of wood, but from the Blunk's bold use of the chainsaw as the primary carving tool. Age has enhanced the fissures and natural cracking of the wood, creating a dynamic and evolving small scale work.
Early in his career, Blunk showed a particular interest in the artworks from Asian cultures. After having served in the Army in Korea, he sought to learn more about Japanese art. He met famed sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who would later introduce him to Rosanjin Kitaoji and Gordon Onslow Ford, who would serve as important artistic influences on Blunk.
This stool and similar works were given by the designer to friends. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Blunk family.
