Catalogue Note

The Foundation currently works out of three spaces open to the public

Fundação Oscar Niemeyer, Rio de Janeiro:

Niemeyer's former office, a nineteenth-century townhouse in the Glória neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, that now houses the Foundation's administration, the collection, and the research center

Casa das Canoas, Rio de Janeiro

The Casa das Canoas, Rio de Janeiro, designed in 1951 by Niemeyer as a residence for himself and his family, which operates as a museum with a permanent exhibition on Niemeyer and a small classroom for courses and seminars.

Espaço Oscar Niemeyer, Brasília

The Espaço Oscar Niemeyer, designed by Niemeyer in 1988 and integrated into his Plaza of the Three Powers complex in Brasília, which offers a large exhibition space dedicated to a permanent multimedia exhibition of Niemeyer's work and a reference library.

A fourth space, currently under construction, will serve as the new headquarters. Part of a series of cultural buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer for the city of Niterói that includes the iconic Museum of Contemporary Art (1991), construction costs will be covered by generous grants from the municipality of Niterói and the state of Rio de Janeiro. With a total area of 4000 square meters, it will be much larger than the townhouse in Gloría and will include administrative offices, studio and gallery spaces, an auditorium, and a reference and documentation center.

Enough space has been set aside for climate-controlled storage areas to house the Oscar Niemeyer Archive and to allow for the planned acquisition of additional funds documenting modern architecture in Brazil. In its new headquarters, the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation will be better able to fulfill its dual mandate of preserving the archive generated by Niemeyer over a seventy-year career and providing a world-class research and exhibition center dedicated to modern architecture.
