Catalogue Note

Sogliano was trained by his fellow Florentine Lorenzo di Credi, working closely with his master until founding his own studio in about 1515. That he was influenced by and inspired by other contemporary artists is certain (Vasari, for example, considered him a follower of Fra Bartolomeo, while certain other works rely on del Sarto's style; he even finished a work left incomplete by that artist). His style, however, was not simply an amalgam of current trends in Florentine painting, but independent; Vasari notes that one of his designs for an altarpiece was rejected by his patrons as too modern.

Everett Fahy, has seen the painting and confirmed the work to be by the artist.
