Catalogue Note

This is the original watercolor for the frontispiece illustration for Les Roses.   In the published engravings, an excerpt in Greek from a poem dedicated to roses by the ancient Greek poet Anacreon (born circa 570 B.C.) was printed in the middle of the wreath (see Fig. 1).
